If you need to authenticate on a Point-to-Point network, then you need the Point-to-Point Protocol, or PPP, to be able to provide authentication on an analog dial-up and ISDN and other types of Point-to-Point Networks. There are also derivatives to PPP, you may find PPTP which is Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol. Commonly youamp;#39;ll see that in Windows operating systems. And thereamp;#39;s PPPoE, which is to Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet, which is commonly used to authenticate over a DSL network. If you need to authenticate over these non-ethernet networks, itamp;#39;s very common to use PAP, CHAP, or MS-CHAP to be able to accomplish that. One of the most basic authentication methods is PAP, or Password Authentication Protocol. You would commonly see PAP used on very old operating systems or legacy systems. And itamp;#39;s very unusual to see PAP used by itself these days. Thatamp;#39;s because PAP communicates in the clear. Thereamp;#39;s no encryption or any additio

The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) provides a simple method for a user to authenticate using a 2-way handshake.
For debugging PPP authentication, use the debug ppp authentication command. The figure shows an example output of the debug ppp authentication command. The following is an interpretation of the output: Line 1 says that the router is unable to authenticate on interface Serial0 because the peer did not send a name. 3.4.1.3 Troubleshooting a PPP Configuration with Authentication Mbarara University course module3 3.4.1.3.html Mbarara University course module3 3.4.1.3.html
The Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) (protocol value= 0xC223) is used to verify the identity of the peer using a 3-way handshake. After the Link Establishment Phase is complete, the authenticator sends a Challenge message to the peer containing a value. CHAP is a stronger authentication method than PAP, because the secret is not transmitted over the link, and because it provides protection against repeated attacks during the life of the link. As a result, if both PAP and CHAP authentication are enabled, CHAP authentication is always performed first.
Configure CHAP On the interface, issue the encapsulation ppp command. Enable the use of CHAP authentication on both routers with the ppp authentication chap command. Configure the usernames and passwords. To do so, issue the username username password password command, whereusernameis the hostname of the peer. The PPP authentication protocols are Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). Each protocol uses a secrets database that contains identification information, or security credentials, for each caller that is permitted to link to the local machine. The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) provides a simple method for the peer to establish its identity using a two-way handshake. After the link is established, an ID and password pair is repeatedly sent by the peer to the authenticator until authentication is acknowledged or the connection is terminated.
You are getting user name and password errors when attempting a PPP connection. Ensure that the user ID and password are entered using the same case. Ensure that the authentication protocol used by the peers is the same. Do not use PAP at one peer, while the other peer is configured as CHAP.
