Cut scores are selected points on the score scale of a test. The points are used to determine whether a particular test score is sufficient for some purpose. For example, student performance on a test may be classified into one of several categories such as basic, proficient, or advanced on the basis of cut scores.
Scaled Scores A scaled score typically tells us how well a child did on a specific sub-test, and a standard score typically tells us how well a child did on a broad domain (which is often made of sub-tests). Scaled Scores have a score range of 0 19 points, with an average score of 10 points.
Level 1 is considered inadequate, level 2 is below satisfactory, level 3 is satisfactory, level 4 is proficient, and level 5 is mastery.
What Are Cut Scores? The scale score thresholds dividing the performance levels are called cut scores.
A scale score is a conversion of the raw score onto a scale that is common to all test forms for that assessment. The scale score takes into account the difficulty level of the specific set of questions based on the test. It quantifies a students performance relative to the passing standards or proficiency levels.
California uses the 145 AND 580 scoring standard2 (which means that no subtest score less than 145 is allowed, and a total score of at least 580 is required.) The 580 total score is based on the test taker scoring at least 145 in all four subtests (4 * 145 = 580).
What does this mean? Where does the 500 come from? Scaled scores are calculated by using statistical procedures to translate raw scores onto the 200-800 scale with 500 as the passing score.
