At a minimum, a cutting list describes every part in terms of its thickness, width and length. Those measurements include the length or width of a parts tenons. The list provides exact measurements of the completed pieces. No additional material is included as a safety net or just in case.
For example, one roll could be cut into two rolls of 45 inches with a 10 inch roll of scrap. Or a roll could be cut into a roll of 45 inches, a roll of 31 inches, and a roll of 14 inches with no scrap. Each such possible combination is called a pattern. For this example, there are 37 different patterns.
An example of a one-dimensional cutting stock problem is the trim loss minimization problem which occurs in the paper industry. In this prob- lem, known quantities of rolls of various widths and the same diameter are to be slit from stock rolls of some standard width and diameter.
In operations research, the cutting-stock problem is the problem of cutting standard-sized pieces of stock material, such as paper rolls or sheet metal, into pieces of specified sizes while minimizing material wasted. It is an optimization problem in mathematics that arises from applications in industry.
Solution Approach Select an initial set of patterns. Solve the linear programming relaxation of the cutting stock problem. Use the dual prices from the linear programming relaxation solution to solve a knapsack problem. If the linear programming relaxation solution is integer, then stop.
The cutting-stock problem is used to minimize the impact of wasting material during the stock cutting process. The linear programming model is developed and implemented on Microsoft Excel to solve for the optimal cutting plan with the criteria of minimizing material waste.
The Classical 1-D Cutting Stock Problem The 1D-CSP is a linear integer programming problem with one decision variable for each possible pattern. If the number of order widths is small, then the number of patterns may be small enough that the problem can be solved using a standard algorithm.
