Gut cutting is a bit outside the scope of this article, but suffice it to say that it involves emptying the contents of the digestive system before weight ins through fasting and other measures such as laxatives to ensure there is no dead mass in the body contributing to scale weight.
Cut less than 5% of your target weight. For instance, if youre a man who wants to compete in the 164183 lb (7483 kg) weight class, youd calculate that 5% of 183 lb (83 kg) is about 9 lb (4.1 kg). In that case, you need to weigh 192 lb (87 kg) or less to cut weight safely.
Or at least, this is much less important than a stack of other factors that I consider in the context of a first competition. So should I cut weight for my first competition? My answer to this question will almost always be no.
One study showed 5% weight-loss over 5 days resulted in no loss in performance with only a 4hr weigh-in. Another showed 5% weight loss over just 3 days resulted in similar outcomes with a 12hr weigh-in. The maximum weight cut I would recommend for somebody one week out from the competition is ~8% of their body weight.
Cut less than 5% of your target weight. Then, calculate whether your current weight is within 5% of the upper limit for the weight class you want to be in.
In order to be competitive, powerlifters must train consistently and maintain a specific bodyweight within their chosen weight class. However, many powerlifters choose to cut weight before a competition weigh-in to gain an advantage over their competitors.
Cutting is a fat-loss phase that bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts use to get as lean as possible. Typically started a few months before a major workout plan, it involves a weight loss diet thats meant to maintain as much muscle as possible.
