Patent illustrations should depict each part of the invention that needs a claim in a detailed way. They should tell the patent examiner how the invention looks like and give them a visual representation of them. Patent drawings describe anything that a written text can not describe.
This is shown by the designation. Patents usually have a two- or three-digit code con- sisting of a two-letter country code, a number, and (optionally) an appendix. The latter indicates whether a patent has been granted or not.
Publication number: the number assigned when the patent application is published at 18 months after filing; and. Patent number: the number assigned when the application becomes a patent.
The sheets of drawings should be numbered in consecutive Arabic numerals, starting with 1, within the sight as defined in paragraph (g) of this section. These numbers, if present, must be placed in the middle of the top of the sheet, but not in the margin.
Reference numbers are used by employing a set of numbers to distinguish each element described in the detailed description section of the specification and the drawings, i.e. for each element one specific and different number is chosen and the same number is used to label that element in the associated drawings.
A patent number is always made up of three parts. A two-letter country code which provides information about the country of origin. The document number which tells you something about the patent family. The type number or kind code which provides information about the granting status.
You can look up all the documents for the patent and patent application (including drawings) by going to the US PTO website and looking for the Public PAIR webpage. Then enter the patent application number or patent number.
