Not all damage to a Federal Reserve note requires for it to be sent to the BEP for possible redemption. For example, dirty or worn currency may be exchanged at a commercial financial institution.
The Federal Reserve DOES NOT accept deposits of bent or partial coin. Bent or partial coin must be sent to the U.S. Mint. You must complete a mutilated coin submission application prior to shipping the coin.
Under regulations issued by the Department of the Treasury, mutilated United States currency may be exchanged at face value if: More than 50% of a note identifiable as United States currency is present.
The cut in such notes, should, however, not have passed through the number panels. All these notes can be exchanged at the counters of any public sector bank branch, any currency chest branch of a private sector bank or any Issue Office of the Reserve Bank of India. There is no need to fill any form for doing this.
Mutilated currency is currency which has been damaged to the extent that: (1) one-half or less of the original note remains; or (2) its condition is such that its value is questionable.
Mutilated Notes Refund value of these notes is, however, paid as per RBI(Note Refund) Rules. These can also be exchanged at the counters of any public sector bank branch, any currency chest branch of a private sector bank or any Issue Office of the RBI without filling any form.
For consumers: If you have damaged or mutilated currency, or need currency replaced, contact the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. If you have currency you suspect is counterfeit, contact your local Secret Service Field Office.
A mutilated note is a note of which a portion is missing or which is composed of more than two pieces.
