The business that hires you should fill in its name and employer identification number (EIN). Youll then fill out the form line by line. This should be your full name. It should match the name on your individual tax return.
If submitting this W-9 as an individual, you should enter the name shown on your tax return. If you have changed your last name without informing the Social Security Administration (SSA), enter your first name, the last name as shown on your Social Security card and your new last name.
In order to determine its status, the U.S. clients may request the Canadian business to complete Form W-8BEN, W-8ECI, W-8IMY or W-8EXP depending on the situation. In some cases Form W-9 is provided, however, Form W-9 should only be completed by U.S. persons.
Generally, an independent contract worker or freelancer who received at least $600 in compensation for services must file Form W-9.
If any of the info showing on Form W-9 needs changing, you wont be able to change it in account hub. Rather, youll need to send us a revised Form W-9. This includes when you initially enroll with a bank as well as subsequent to being approved by the bank.
If youre a Canadian and you dont have a TIN, dont worry! Thats where Form W-8BEN steps in. This form is like the international cousin of Form W-9. Its designed specifically for foreign individuals to confirm that theyre not U.S. citizens but are still earning income from a U.S. source.
