How to name-drop in a cover letter? Find someone you know at the company you are applying for. Determine their docHub. Ask for permission to use their name in your cover letter. Drop their name into your cover letter opening. Send them a copy of your cover letter before you send it out.
Names do matter. A 2003 study showed that when job interviewers had nothing to go on except resumes, people with white-sounding names were 50 percent more likely to get interviews than people with names associated with African-Americans.
You can use your given first name (e.g., Elizabeth) or your shortened first name (e.g., Liz or Beth). However, dont use a nickname, especially one that can lead someone to form an opinion about you (e.g., Ace or Dizz).
Resumes and cover letters are not legal documents, so it is acceptable to list your preferred name on them. The way that some people do this is by listing the first initial of their legal name, followed by their preferred name (e.g. M. Andrew Smith).
During an interview you might share that you use your middle name, just to avoid any confusion (or suspicion), in the event paperwork needs to be filled out for a background check. As long as you arent trying to hide and deceive anyone, you should feel free to use your middle name, including on your resume.
It is necessary to use your legal name on legal documents, such as the job application, tax forms, insurance forms, etc.
Always put your full name (first and last) at the top of each page of your resume. You can use your given name (Joseph), or a preferred name (Joe). You can also include your middle name or initial if you prefer. However, we recommend that you dont use a nickname that may appear unprofessional, such as Bubba or Ace.
If youve legally changed your name, feel free to use that. Just make sure that regardless of whatever name you use on the resume, use your legal name on the job application - that is a legal document, and not putting your legal name on that can have far-docHubing (negative) consequences.
