Metal zippers can be shortened by removing the metal teeth so that you can cut the extra length before sewing into your garment. Once you get the length right you dont have to worry about breaking needles when sewing across the zipper.
Measure from the bottom of the zipper and mark your desired finished length. Cut the zipper tape at least a half inch above your mark. Seal the end of the zipper tape. Use wire cutters and pliers to cut off and remove the zipper teeth above your mark.

Metal zippers can be shortened by removing the metal teeth so that you can cut the extra length before sewing into your garment. Once you get the length right you dont have to worry about breaking needles when sewing across the zipper.
You can shorten it before sewing, if you like. Simply measure the length you want, do the zip up and tack across the teeth at the desired length (by hand or machine). Cut an inch (2cm) below the tacks, with pinking shears if you have them, though straight scissors will do. Sew into your seam in the usual way.
Use cutting pliers (nippers) to cut and pull metal zipper teeth from the zipper tape. Use nippers to cut away the plastic zipper teeth heads. After removing the plastic zipper teeth heads, use the nippers to snip the rest of the plastic teeth from the zipper tape.
Work from the top First, mark the desired shorter length at the top of the zipper tape. Using the diagonal pliers, cut and pull off metal teeth on each side of the tape for at least 1 inch above the marked line. Take your time and use care to avoid damaging the zipper tape when removing the metal teeth.
