Grinding must only be done on the surface of the wheel. But, when it comes to edge grinding, using a cut-off wheel can be risky. It can break the wheel when use side for deburring or grinding. The workpiece has the potential to cut through the reinforcing side fiberglass, causing the wheel to deteriorate.
Tools not properly maintained can, and do, lead to wheel breakages. Customers must inspect their machines every time a new grinding wheel is mounted. Flanges should be checked for proper type, flatness, burrs, or any damage. Failure to properly inspect the flanges can lead to wheel breakage and personal injury.
Type 27 Wheel A saucer/center depressed shaped wheel intended for grinding on the face of the wheel used with angle grinders fitted with the appropriate guard.
As the name clearly indicates, cut-off discs are used for cutting metal bars and metal sheets. Compared to grinding wheels, cut-off wheels are thinner in order to deliver the most accurate cuts. This is why working with them is more dangerous.
Never remove or alter any wheel guards on your machine. Never use a wheel that has been damaged, cracked, or dropped. Dont use arbor bushings other than those supplied by the wheel manufacturer. Dont use your wheels to cut any material that they are not specifically designed for.
Besides the overall size of the cut-off discs, the main differences to consider are T1 vs T27 types and thickness. Type 1 (T1) wheels are flat across the entire face, from the edges through the center, of the cutting disc. Type 27 (T27) cut wheels are also flat, but the center of the disc is pushed back.
The two most common styles of wheel are the Type 1 straight wheel and the Type 27 depressed center wheel. Type 1 wheels are intended for cut-off applications, while Type 27 can be used for cut-off and grinding applications.
A type 1 cut-off wheel, also known as a type 41 cut-off wheel, is completely flat. It is typically considered the most efficient type of wheel for general all-purpose cutting. Because it lacks a depressed center, it provides more cutting surface and minimizes interference with the workpiece.
Aluminum oxide cut-off wheel with 60 and 46 grit are ideal for sheet metal with minimum burring.
ZIPCUT is the highest performing cut-off wheel on the market. Faster, cooler, freer cutting and heavily reinforced for added safety, ZIPCUT provides premium performance while resisting twisting and bending. This allows for a true, straight cut every time.
