Writing a Cutline (Caption): Three Examples In journalism, the “cutline” is the text below a picture, explaining what the reader is looking at.
In some cases captions and cutlines are distinguished, where the caption is a short (usually one-line) title/explanation for the photo, while the cutline is a longer, prose block under the caption, generally describing the photograph, giving context, or relating it to the article.
A cutline is the caption near a photograph in a newspaper. It informs the reader of who, what, when, where, and why or how about the photograph.
A cutline is written like a straight news piece boiled down to a single sentence. The sentence should include the five W's of pertinent information: who, what, when, where and why.
Cutlines: Cutlines (at newspapers and some magazines) are the words (under the caption, if. there is one) describing the photograph or illustration.
Like news stories, they must be readable and informative. Simply stated, cutlines should explain the picture so that the reader is left with no reasonable questions. The cutline should not restate what the picture makes obvious. Rather, it should supply information the picture cannot.
a line marked on a piece of wood, metal, etc, to show where it is to be cut.
(journalism, broadcasting) A caption under a photograph, or more narrowly just the explanatory text block under a photograph, excluding the title.
Writing captions In most photo captions, the first sentence identifies the people and place in the photograph, and the date and location where it was taken. The second (and perhaps third) sentence should provide contextual information to help readers understand what they are looking at.
Answer and Explanation: A cutline in marketing and business involves giving details of an image used for marketing purposes. Therefore, this may serve as a guide or giving additional information of the images portrayed during the marketing processes.
