The New Testament contains 21 letters addressed to early Christian communities across the Roman Empire, written by the apostles appointed by Jesus. These letters, composed in prose discourse, often carry background assumptions that may not be explicitly stated. To effectively read these letters, it's important to understand them in their historical context, which involves three levels. The first level focuses on how these letters contribute to the broader narrative of the Scriptures. This context is crucial for grasping the intended messages and implications for the original audiences.

The circumcision of Jesus is celebrated as a feast day in the liturgical calendar of many Christian denominations, while the teachings of the Apostle Paul asserted that physical circumcision was unnecessary for the salvation of Gentiles and their membership in the New Covenant.
2 Now I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. 3 I testify again to every man who receives circumcision that he is bound to keep the whole law. 4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.
Matthew 24:22 in Other Translations 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elects sake those days shall be shortened. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved.
Lev. 18. [29] For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people.
In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul uses the metaphor of a circumcision of the heart in order to argue for the inclusion of non-circumcised Gentiles into the congregations of Jesus-followers in Rome and elsewhere (Rom 2:2829):
The commandment to circumcise was a covenant made with Abraham and is recorded in Genesis 17:1014, reading: And God spoke to Abraham saying: This is my covenant which you shall keep between me and you and thy seed after you every male child among you shall be circumcised.
Again, the author of Acts made clear that Jewish Christ followers ought to circumcise their newborn sons, while gentiles should not practice circumcision ( Acts 21:17-26 ).
