The cutting stock problem is an integer linear program with one integer decision variable for each possible pattern. If the number of order widths is small, then the number of patterns may be small enough that the problem can be solved using a standard branch-and-bound algorithm.
The two-dimensional guillotine cutting stock problem seeks to apply a sequence of guillotine (edge to edge) cuts to extract a collection of smaller rectangles from a stock piece.
An example of a one-dimensional cutting stock problem is the trim loss minimization problem which occurs in the paper industry. In this prob- lem, known quantities of rolls of various widths and the same diameter are to be slit from stock rolls of some standard width and diameter.
A two-dimensional cutting stock problem (2DCSP) needs to cut a set of given rectangular items from standard-sized rectangular materials with the objective of minimizing the number of materials used.
1. Limited to 2D Shapes: 2D laser cutting cannot create true three-dimensional objects, which eventually restricts its design possibilities. 2. Requires Flat Materials: The cutting process is limited to flat sheet materials, precluding the use of pre-formed or irregular shapes and the complex rotary system.
Industrial applications of cutting-stock problems for high production volumes arise especially when basic material is produced in large rolls that are further cut into smaller units (see roll slitting). This is done e.g. in paper and plastic film industries but also in production of flat metals like steel or brass.
2D cutting is the process of taking a two dimensional digital design and using a cutting machine to create a physical version of the design out of a selected medium (such as paper, cardstock, vinyl, etc.).
In operations research, the cutting-stock problem is the problem of cutting standard-sized pieces of stock material, such as paper rolls or sheet metal, into pieces of specified sizes while minimizing material wasted. It is an optimization problem in mathematics that arises from applications in industry.
