Ajanta caves are located in the Sahyadri ranges (Western Ghats). These are a series of rock-cut caves on Waghora river near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. There are a total of 29 buddhist caves in Ajanta of which 4 were used as Chaitya or prayer halls while 25 were used as Viharas or residential caves..
The cave has a unique Chaitya Griha or prayer hall. It has 27 pillars around the hall with wooden beams fixed on the ceilings. The interesting thing is that the beams on the ceiling are the original ones. It is the most impressive large shrine chaitya griha with an open, horseshoe arched entrance.
Conclusion. The caves of Ajanta and Ellora are among the earliest Buddhist structures. Between the 2nd century BC and the 6th century AD, the Ajanta Ellora caves developed. Since 1983, the paintings and sculptures of the Ajanta and Ellora caves have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
These caves are notable for their indications of the awareness of wooden architecture. The carvings prove that tabla a percussion instrument was used in India for at least 2300 years, disproving the centuries-held belief that the tabla was introduced to India by outsiders or from Turko-Arab.
The caves belong to the Theravada (Hinayana) tradition of Buddhism and are amongst the oldest in Western India. They are approx 400 ft above the village of Bhaja, used as an important ancient trading route that ran from the Arabian Sea eastward into the Deccan plateau.
Bhaja Caves is a small cluster of Buddhist Caves built by the Hinayana sect of Buddhism near Lonavala in Maharashtra. The work on these Caves started in 2nd century BC and finished in 2nd century AD.
