What is latex ink? Generally, latex ink is a heat-fusing type, which allows printing on various un-coated base materials even though it is a water-based ink. Handling is similar to water pigment ink, but it can be fused to the base material like a solvent ink, making it waterproof and robust against scratches.
For example, solvent based ink printers tend to be a much better option for achieving optimum results when printing signs and vehicle wraps, whereas, latex based printers tend to be best suited to soft signage and wallpaper.
Latex is water based ink. It is made from polymers (or resin - a man-made synthetic, not from a rubber tree where latex is derived), water, and pigment. Polymers encapsulate the pigments and are dissolved by heat to form a membrane that firmly affixes pigments to the surface of the media.
Latex printed graphics do not need to be laminated. Straight out of the printer, these graphics can survive for up to 3 years outside without any additional lamination.
Latex ink is made up of 70% water, making it a greener option than traditional solvent-based ink. It helps us, and you, meet our sustainability goals. Latex printing uses print heads to effectively distribute water-based inks onto a diverse range of media.
Solvent based inks include pigment and resin (binder), together constituting the solid component of the ink, diluted using a solvent. Solvent based inks are used for printing in two distinct technologies - Gravure Print and Flexo Print.
Eco-conscious water-based ink Unlike solvent inks, the latex ink has low-VOC emissions. Pigments are dissolved by resins in water instead of solvents. The odor is remarkably reduced. No special ventilation is required for installing the printer.
In the case of latex ink printing, the latex acts as a carrier for the color pigments. Because heaters dry the latex as it comes off the printer, the output can be rolled or applied (in the case of vehicle decals) immediately after printing. The finished printed product is durable, long-lasting, and eco-friendly.
