While RTF is most often used when exchanging documents between different word processing programs or operating systems, you can also use it to transfer documents between different versions of the same word processor.
What is the difference between RTF and ODT file formats? Well, Norman. While RTF was intended to be an interchange format, but keeping up itself as a closed one, ODF (Open Document Format, being odT its text dedicated one) is an open and free format, letting us to copy, modify, study, etc.
Since we are talking about a word processor, the right thing to say is odt, not odf. After all, ODF writes a whole family of formats: odt for word processors, ods for table processors, odp for electronic presentations. The native (designed specifically for it) office solution created for ODF format is OpenOffice.
Google Docs and Microsoft 365 Online can open ODT files online, and you can edit them there as well. If youre using Google Docs to edit the ODT file, you can either upload the file to Google Drive through the New File upload menu, or select the file picker button on Google Docs.
The major downside is file size. RTF documents are not compressed so they are much larger than the same document saved in . docx or . odt formats that automatically shrink the file.
You can open and save files in the OpenDocument Text (. odt) file format used by some word processing applications.
The . odt file is an OpenOffice document file. These documents are typically created using programs such as Apache OpenOffice Writer and LibreOffice Writer, word processing programs comparable to Microsoft Word and Google Docs. ODT files are similar to file formats created using Word, such as DOCX and DOC.
The primary advantage of using RTF is that it is a cross-platform format. This means that you can open and edit RTF files on any word processor that supports the format. Another advantage of RTF is that it preserves the formatting of your document.
