Hello thanks, Im Charlie Becker I work for the Virginia Department of Forestry as the utilization and marketing manager working with forest industry and landowners, finding markets for trees in Virginia. Today were going to talk a little bit about markets and grading the lumber and logs. The reason for doing this is that you get the best money out of your logs and the best products you need to know the quality of the wood in it and what the markets need with who you sell it to. This usually involves knowing the type of species you have the size of the trees you have and the quality. In most cases for most trees the lower part of the tree has the highest quality wood and the most clear wood. This is because in most cases it has lost the branches first and the wood has grown over giving it the most amount of clear wood. And for most commercial uses of lumber to clear the boards the better it is. So normally is what we do is measure from the bottom up to where we start finding defects,

The plain sawing method is the most common. It consists of sawing boards off the log in strips parallel to the pith. These boards are then sawn lengthwise again. Every board sawn this way has a unique appearance.
A sawmill works by cutting logs into lumber using large bandsaw blades. The same process is repeated over and over, log by log, to produce high-volumes of rough cut lumber. If youre interested in learning step by step how a sawmill works, feel free to watch the video below.

A chainsaw would be your best bet, or use a handheld circular saw and go all the way around the log with the cut. Make yourself a jig out of 2x2 cut diagonally and fixed to a piece of ply so its shaped like an M, then rest your log in the centre section between the two fillets, crack on and watch your fingers.
