Sort command uses ____ as default field delimiter. Explanation: Unlike cut and paste command which uses tab as the default field delimiter, sort command uses one or more contiguous spaces as the default field separator.
The '-c' option is used to cut a specific section by character. However, these character arguments can be a number or a range of numbers, a list of comma-separated numbers, or any other character. To cut by specified character, execute the command as follows: cut -c < characters>
The cut command removes the selected data from its original position, while the copy command creates a duplicate; in both cases the selected data is kept in temporary storage (the clipboard). The data from the clipboard is later inserted wherever a paste command is issued.
To specify the fields that should be cut invoke the command with the -f option. When not specified, the default delimiter is “TAB”. In the examples below, we will use the following file. The fields are separated by tabs.
Linux cut command is useful for selecting a specific column of a file. It is used to cut a specific sections by byte position, character, and field and writes them to standard output. It cuts a line and extracts the text data. It is necessary to pass an argument with it; otherwise, it will throw an error message.
A delimiter is a character that marks the beginning or end of a unit of data. A delimited field is a variable-length field where the field length is set based on the field's contents. Commonly used delimiters in export files include the comma (,), semicolon (;), and colon (:).
The term "field" is often times associated with tools such as cut and awk . A field would be similar to a columns worth of data, if you take the data and separate it using a specific character. Typically the character used to do this is a Space .
Cut Based on a Delimiter You can use any character as a delimiter. Using the cut command to extract fields from a file without specifying the -d option means that the default delimiter is the tab character.
The cut utility shall cut out bytes ( -b option), characters ( -c option), or character- delimited fields ( -f option) from each line in one or more files, concatenate them, and write them to standard output.
