okay so lets take a look at the cuts command so cut allows you to remove sections of text from a line so lets start off with a line so lets just echo I like a lamp and pipe that inter cut and the first flag were going to use is the bytes flag so - B and lets cut the first byte so you can see we get the I character from the beginning of that line with cut we can also select sequences and ranges of biiss characters or fields so lets just do a sequence here so the same thing and lets get the sixth byte as well and we get an iron and E so when cutting text is better to use the character flag instead of the byte flag as this flag uses the locale information to determine how many bytes represent a character so as my locale is English UK if I try and cut some text thats in a different language with the character flag Ill get some strange output but if my locale language was set to the language that I was cutting the character flag would work as expected so Ive got a file here which

You can cut in awk using awk's function split . You can also filter records using a regex condition within awk, making grep and cut superfluous. This breaks down like: Set the output field separator to be a pipe between two spaces.

The awk function split(s,a,sep) splits a string s into an awk array a using the delimiter sep. Variable hms is an array so hms[2] is 34 . The last three statements are equivalent, but the last two more convenient for longer arrays. In the second you can specify the start index and number of elements to print.
You must specify either the -c option to cut by column or -f to cut by fields. (Fields are separated by tabs unless you specify a different field separator with -d. Use quotes (Section 27.12) if you want a space or other special character as the delimiter.)
How to Split a File of Strings with Awk Scan the files, line by line. Split each line into fields/columns. Specify patterns and compare the lines of the file to those patterns. Perform various actions on the lines that match a given pattern.
The awk implementation of cut uses the getopt() library function (see Processing Command-Line Options) and the join() library function (see Merging an Array into a String). The current POSIX version of cut has options to cut fields based on both bytes and characters.

-d, --delimiter=DELIM: It is used to cut a specific section by a delimiter. -f, --fields=LIST: It is used to select the specific fields. It also prints any line that does not contain any delimiter character, unless the -s option is specified. -n: It is used to ignore any option.
cut accepts a single-character delimiter, and is suitable only for very simple text file formats. Awk is much more versatile, and can handle somewhat more complex field delimiter definitions and even (in some dialects) a regular expression. By default, Awk regards sequences of whitespace as a single delimiter.
