- Today, were learning how to lay out and cut common rafters using a speed square and a basic calculator. Gabled roofs like our mock-up here are made up of common rafters, and in order to lay out those rafters, youll need to know the slope of the roof first. In order to get the slope youll need to measure and understand four things: span, total run, unit run, and unit rise. First is the span. The span is the total measurement of the building from its outside edges. So the span of our mock-up here is four feet. Next is the total run. This is an easy number to get because its half the distance of the span, or in our case, two feet. To understand unit rise and unit run, were gonna use this visual aid. Unit run, which is represented by this side of the triangle, is always 12 inches for rafters that are 90 degrees to the ridge, like our common rafters. And then last is the unit rise. So for every 12 inches of unit run, a rafter will rise a certain amount which is normally predetermine

Use the cut command to write selected bytes, characters, or fields from each line of a file to standard output. This displays the login name and full user name fields of the system password file. These are the first and fifth fields ( -f1,5 ) separated by colons ( -d: ).
The -f is the field specifier and the -d is the delimiter. The command above says to first cut the line up using as the delimiter, and return back the 2nd field( -f2 ). The second command cuts up that result using the : delimiter, and returns back the 1st field( -f1 ).
The command yy (yank yank) is used to copy a line. Move the cursor to the line you want to copy and then press yy. The p command paste a copied or cut content after the current line.
Each line of the file can be sliced and the required data can be retrieved easily by using `cut` command. It can also be used to cut text by delimiter or character or byte position. This command has many options to cut data from the text or file in different ways.
The term field is often times associated with tools such as cut and awk . A field would be similar to a columns worth of data, if you take the data and separate it using a specific character. Typically the character used to do this is a Space .
To specify the fields that should be cut invoke the command with the -f option. When not specified, the default delimiter is TAB. In the examples below, we will use the following file. The fields are separated by tabs.
The cut command in UNIX is a command for cutting out the sections from each line of files and writing the result to standard output. It can be used to cut parts of a line by byte position, character and field. Basically the cut command slices a line and extracts the text.
The cut utility shall cut out bytes ( -b option), characters ( -c option), or character- delimited fields ( -f option) from each line in one or more files, concatenate them, and write them to standard output.
