Voluntary paycheck deductions are taken for programs in which individuals participate voluntarily, e.g., health insurance, dental insurance, retirement, etc. Participation in these programs may require that the individual complete a written salary reduction agreement authorizing payroll deductions.
What deductions are taken from a pay cheque in Ontario? Union dues. Health and dental insurance premiums. Retirement savings plan contributions. Parking or transit passes. Childcare expenses. Charitable donations. Statutory deductions.
Deductions that are required of the employer by federal or state law, such as income taxes or garnishments. Deductions expressly authorized in writing by the employee to cover insurance premiums, hospital or medical dues or other deductions not amounting to a rebate or deduction from the wage paid to the employee.
A wage deduction authorization agreement often includes terms such as the amount of money being deducted from each paycheck along with the frequency, e.g., weekly or monthly; as well as the reason for the deduction.
If an employer does not withhold deductions, or if it makes deductions but does not remit them, it becomes liable for the amount that should have been remitted. The CRA can go as far as taking legal action, such as garnishing your salary or other sources of income or seizing and selling property.
Employers can deduct from an employees earnings if the deduction is: Required by law, such as federal and provincial tax, contributions to the Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance premiums, or a garnishee of the court. Employers dont need written authorization from the employee for this type of deduction.
Authority to Deduct means the confirmatory authorisation provided by the Employee in the agreement between the employee and the Bank, authorising the Employer to make deductions from the employees salary or wage.
