The idea of reality being a simulation suggests that everything we perceive may be artificial. Supporters of simulation theory argue that it is not only possible but likely. This concept has roots in ancient cultures and was popularized by Nick Bostrom, an Oxford philosopher, in his 2003 paper on the topic. Bostrom introduces the simulation trilemma, which posits that one of three scenarios must be true: humanity either destroys itself before creating a simulation, can create a simulation but chooses not to, or is already living in a simulation. According to Bostrom, each of these possibilities holds equal likelihood.
