Engraving is an intaglio printmaking process in which lines are cut into a metal plate in order to hold the ink. In engraving, the plate can be made of copper or zinc. The metal plate is first polished to remove all scratches and imperfections from the surface so that only the intentional lines will be printed.
Laser engravers and laser cutters are basically the same machine. Trotec laser machines, like most lasers, can engrave as well as cut. They are just called laser cutters or laser engravers based on what their main use is. If the laser is largely used for cutting, it is usually referred to as a laser cutter.
The main difference between specified cutting and engraving machines is the laser machine lens. The lens focal length is shorter in the laser engraving machine to give a finer spot size when working on materials. This gives a higher quality when engraving items such as photographic images.
Laser engraving can be used on a wide range of materials, including wood, metal, glass, plastic, and more. It can be used to create detailed designs, identification codes, logos, and other information.
There are three types of laser engraving: etching, deep laser engraving, and laser ablation (the difference between the three is what the surface is and how much you remove)
When cutting, the glass worker must look through the glass, as the side of the glass that is being cut rests on top of the wheel. In engraving, the wheel hangs and rotates on top of the glass. Cutting tends to be in patterns, though there figurative and representational examples. Engraving is mainly representational.
Laser engraving is a process that vaporizes materials into fumes to engrave permanent, deep marks. The laser beam acts as a chisel, incising marks by removing layers from the surface of the material. The laser hits localized areas with massive levels of energy to generate the high heat required for vaporization.

Reverse engraving refers to the process of engraving the under-side of a substrate allowing the top or finished side of the substrate to remain smooth. The process of reverse engraving is very similar to traditional first. surface (top) engraving.
