Complete ACL tears have a much less positive outcome without surgery. After a complete ACL tear, some patients are unable to participate in cutting- or pivoting-type sports, while others have instability during even normal activities, such as walking.
Your surgeon will make two small cuts about 1/4-inch-long around your knee. An arthroscope, a tube with a small video camera on the end is inserted through one incision to see the inside of the knee joint.
An anterior cruciate ligament injury is the over-stretching or tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee. A tear may be partial or complete. The ligaments which attach the upper leg bone (femur) to the large lower leg bone (tibia) create a hinge joint called the knee.
We consider non-surgical treatments first, but if the tear is complete and the knee is unstable, or the knee doesnt heal with non-surgical treatment, surgery may be necessary. The ACL cannot heal on its own because there is no blood supply to this ligament.
Reduced activities. Without an ACL, the knee is unlikely to support aggressive landing, cutting and pivoting. Living with a torn ACL may mean limiting participation in sports, work and activities that cause the knee to swell, give way or feel unstable.
Without an ACL, the knee is unlikely to support aggressive landing, cutting and pivoting. Living with a torn ACL may mean limiting participation in sports, work and activities that cause the knee to swell, give way or feel unstable. Risk of other injuries. The ACL restrains the thigh and shinbone in the knee.
How long does it take to recover from a torn ACL? It usually takes six to nine months to recover from a torn ACL. Competitive athletes may need a little longer than this to heal fully before theyre cleared to return to their sport. Your provider will tell you when you can resume physical activities.
Can you walk with a torn ACL? The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line.
