welcome to exhale metric number 1093 hey if you want to download this workbook and follow along click on a link below the video hey in this video we have some descriptions and we need to get the date out of the description into a column now we could do this with a formula and every time I try to do data extraction from the middle of a text string I have like 10 different ways I can do it and its never the most efficient ah but no problem if we dont need a formula if we dont need to make it automatic we can use text to columns now well come back to the formula in just a moment but text columns is absolutely easy now either if were using a formula or text to columns we still have to recognize a pattern and it looks like the date is between dashes lets go ahead and highlight this column and you use that - as a delimiter that means a separator between different bits of data and use text to come data text to columns or we can use the keyboard in 2007 or later alt AE alright so there

Select all the cells that contain dates that you want to convert to text. Go to Data Data Tools Text to Column. This would instantly convert the dates into text format.
If a cell contains a combined date and time, you can extract just the date value, by using the INT function. Excel stores dates as numbers, with a decimal portion representing the time. In the screen shot below, the integer in cell B3 (42418) represents the date, and the decimal portion (. 50) is the time.
The DATEVALUE function in Excel converts a date in the text format to a serial number that Excel recognizes as a date. So, the formula to convert a text value to date is as simple as =DATEVALUE(A1) , where A1 is a cell with a date stored as a text string.
Extract date from a date and time Formula 1: =INT(B3) Formula 2: =TRUNC(B3) =INT(number) =TRUNC(number, [numdigits]) =TRUNC(B3)
1. Select a cell, for instance, C2, type this formula =DAY(A2), press Enter, the day of the reference cell is extracted. 2. And go to next cell, D2 for instance, type this formula =MONTH(A2), press Enter to extract the month only from the reference cell.
When writing the date by numbers only, one can separate them by using a hyphen (-), a slash (/), or a dot (.): 05-07-2013, or 05/07/2013, or 05.07. 2013. Omitting the initial zero in the numbers smaller than 10 is also accepted: 5-7-2013, 5/7/2013, or 5.7. 2013.
When you enter a date in Excel, you can use either slashes (/) or dashes (-) as separators. For example, 3/14/2015 and 14-3-2015 both refer to March 14, 2015. This can be helpful if youre working with data from different sources that use different date formats.
Select the Date tab. In the Date separator box, change the slash (/) to a period (.). Click Apply and OK. This is the way we can change the slash separator in date with period in Microsoft Excel 2010 and 2013.
Follow these steps: Select a blank cell and verify that its number format is General. Click the cell that contains the text-formatted date that you want to convert. Press ENTER, and the DATEVALUE function returns the serial number of the date that is represented by the text date.
Press Ctrl+1 to open the Format Cells dialog. On the Number tab, select Custom from the Category list and type the date format you want in the Type box. Click OK to save the changes.
