Like any other OS, you can use certain commands to see Linux log files. Linux logs will display with the command cd/var/log. Then, you can type ls to see the logs stored under this directory. One of the most important logs to view is the syslog, which logs everything but auth-related messages.
The -c option is used to cut a specific section by character. However, these character arguments can be a number or a range of numbers, a list of comma-separated numbers, or any other character. To cut by specified character, execute the command as follows: cut -c characters
Is there a proper way to clear log files on Unix? You can simply truncate a log file using filename syntax. For example if log file name is /var/log/foo, try /var/log/foo as root user.
Empty or delete the contents of a large file using the truncate command in the Linux/Unix system. The truncate command is used to shrink or extend the size of a file to a specified size in the Linux system. It is also used to empty large file contents by using the -s option followed by 0 (zero) specified size.
The cut command in UNIX is a command for cutting out the sections from each line of files and writing the result to standard output. It can be used to cut parts of a line by byte position, character and field. Basically the cut command slices a line and extracts the text.
Open up a terminal window and issue the command cd /var/log. Now issue the command ls and you will see the logs housed within this directory (Figure 1).
Truncate the transaction log Right-click the database and select Properties - Options. Set the recovery model to Simple and exit the menu. Right-click the database again and select Tasks - Shrink - Files. Change the type to Log . Under Shrink action, select Reorganize pages before releasing unused space and click OK.
Method 1: Truncate a file using truncate command The safest way to truncate a log file is using the truncate command. In the above command, -s is used to set/adjust the size (in bytes) of the file. When you use -s 0, it means you adjusted the file size to 0 bytes. If you view the file content, it will be empty.
