A Swedish fire log, also known as a Canadian candle, is a log that has been vertically cut and set on fire. Whats great about the fire is that its self-feeding. The log burns from the inside out and the fire can last for two to five hours depending on the size and material of the wood.
Also called Swedish candles, Swedish torch logs are a type of wood fuel consisting of a short hardwood log with four vertical slits cut into it. The slits create a chimney effect as hot air rises to the top and cold air is sucked in from beneath.
Gather kindling (dry sticks, fatwood) tinder (birch bark, dry grass, paper). Insert kindling in the center of the log. Dont overstuff or put kindling towards the outside of the log, as this will restrict airflow. A nice small bunch in the middle is all you need.
Starting the Fire Dryer lint, wood shavings, and paper are good candidates. From there, add small kindling and twigs to the top of the log, and keep extra kindling handy to add later. Light the tinder you stuffed into the cracks first. The flames should ignite the kindling on top of the log and start your fire.
The log should burn for approximately two to four hours, which is just perfect to do some cooking and stay warm while you feast. Rest a frying pan or a kettle on the top of the log, like a stove-top burner. Itll hold it flat, right over the flame.

Unlike most campfires that need occasional tending, the Swedish Fire Log is completely self-sufficient once properly lit. As embers burn at the top, they fall down into the log, burning it from the top down. Air is continually drawn in through the slits on the side.
Barbecue lighters or scrunched-up newspaper are ideal for lighting the Swedish fire log. Just push the lighter material into the hole in the middle and add some wood shavings or other tinder on top. Your Swedish fire log is now ready to light; depending on its size, your torch should stay alight for 2-5 hours.
Pine, spruce, and cedar are ideal for this: they split easily, and their resins allow the fires to burn hotter. That said, hardwoods will burn longer, and youll often get large logs from them. An oak or maple trunk can get huge, and lighting one of those can give you heat and light all night.
