Symptoms A loud pop or a "popping" sensation in the knee. Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. A feeling of instability or "giving way" with weight bearing.
There are four commonly used grafts for ACL reconstruction. Patellar tendon autograft. The surgeon removes the middle third of your patellar tendon and pieces of bone (bone plugs) from your shin and kneecap. ... Hamstring tendon autograft. ... Quadriceps tendon autograft. ... Allograft.
It is possible to go through life without an ACL. Eventually, scar tissue builds and will contribute to some knee stability. However, it is not the same stability that an ACL provides. Whether or not you are a physically active individual or casually active, it is possible to maintain your quality of life successfully.
Living with a torn ACL: Some patients choose to live with a torn ACL. For younger people, it may not be advisable to live a lifetime with this ligament torn. Although in some cases the ACL ligament can scar onto the PCL and act stable, more often instability occurs and it should not be ignored.
Injury to the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve (IPBSN) is common after arthroscopic ACL reconstruction with hamstring tendon autograft, as reported in up to 88% of the cases.
Donor site problems have led to search of allografts. The commonly used allografts for ACL reconstruction are BPTB grafts, HS grafts, tibial is posterior/anterior and tendo achilles grafts.
Full ACL tears cannot heal on their own. These tears almost always need to be treated surgically, typically using a minimally invasive approach called arthroscopy.
Most people will experience a return in some or part of their sensation. This is probably because the nerve was simply stretched through the surgery. Or other nerves have grown and compensated for the other. If the nerve is purely stretched, experts would suggest that the nerve should recover in 6-12 weeks.
When performing reconstruction of the ACL, the major complications that can arise include missed concomitant injuries, tunnel malposition, patellar fracture, knee stiffness, and infection. We review the complications that can occur as a result of errors made before, during, and after surgery.
A torn ACL is very painful and can debilitate a person for several months and perhaps for life, although recovery for some is possible.
