If youre put on a PIP, take time to process your emotions and understand the situation. Then, carefully review the documents and ask for a detailed plan of action that coincides with your growth at the company. It may help to seek the guidance of a mentor either within the company or a professional career coach.
When it comes to PIPs, things can go either way: some employees will end up getting fired after a PIP, while others will go on to not only keep their jobs but truly thrive in them. The good news is that, in some cases, the outcome is up to you.
When an employee is on a performance improvement plan (PIP), and their performance has not improved and has, in fact, gotten worse, it is perfectly reasonable to cut the timeframe of the PIP short and move forward with further disciplinary action, including termination.
The resignation will not require your employer to remove the PIP. Future employers may ask why you left. Your current employer may give information that is truthful and accurate about your employment, including why you left, or that you were subject to a PIP.
On the manager side, Ive put a few people on PIPs. From my experience about 25% of folks survive a PIP. In one case, I was promoted into a manager roll I didnt really want, but was strongly encouraged to take.
This could potentially harm your reputation or future employment opportunities. If you are being threatened with termination if you do not sign the document, this could also be seen as retaliatory behavior.
A PIP is usually for job performance issues (hence, performance improvement plan). This could mean anything from not making enough sales to being inept at the jobs essential functions. If job performance doesnt improve under the PIP, termination may be the end result depending on company policies and practices.
If you were put on a performance improvement plan, its generally not a good idea to quit unless you find another job first. You can beat the PIP, even if it was secretly created to force you out.
