Signs and symptoms of an ACL injury usually include: A loud pop or a "popping" sensation in the knee. Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. A feeling of instability or "giving way" with weight bearing.
Types of ACL Surgery Autograft. Your doctor uses a tendon from somewhere else in your body (like your other knee, hamstring, or thigh). Allograft. This type of graft uses tissue from someone else (a deceased donor). Synthetic graft. This is when artificial materials replace the tendon.
Many people hear a pop or feel a "popping" sensation in the knee when an ACL injury occurs. Your knee may swell, feel unstable and become too painful to bear weight.
A torn ACL is very painful and can debilitate a person for several months and perhaps for life, although recovery for some is possible.
Types of ACL Injuries Grade 1 — least severe ACL injury. Means you stretched but didn't quite tear, the ACL. The ligament can still keep the knee joint stable. Grade 2 — a partial tear. Means you stretched the ACL, making it loose. ... Grade 3 — most severe ACL injury. Means a complete or near complete tear.
The patellar tendon graft (PTG) has always been the gold standard for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Yet, most orthopedic surgeons prefer hamstring grafts for younger athletes and cadaver grafts for older patients.
Can I live a normal life with an ACL tear? Yes, but it may take some time before you're completely back to how you were before the injury. Whether you choose to have surgery or not, with physical therapy you will eventually be back to normal and able to live your life.
ACL injuries are classified by grades 1, 2, and 3. Depending on the grade of ACL injury, the patient's age, and level of athleticism, non-operative or surgical treatments may be recommended.
It is possible to go through life without an ACL. Eventually, scar tissue builds and will contribute to some knee stability. However, it is not the same stability that an ACL provides. Whether or not you are a physically active individual or casually active, it is possible to maintain your quality of life successfully.
