The AFP concentration in maternal serum rises throughout pregnancy, from the nonpregnancy level of 0.2 ng/mL to about 250 ng/mL at 32 weeks gestation.
AFP is measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). An AFP level between 0 ng/mL to 40 ng/mL is normal for adults. An extremely high level of AFP in your blood—greater than 400 ng/mL—could be a sign of liver tumors.
A positive test with a high AFP suggests a birth defect like spina bifida. That's typically a result of 2.5 times or more than the "average" level of AFP you'd expect to see at that point in your pregnancy. A positive test with low AFP could mean a problem like Down syndrome or Edwards syndrome.
If your doctor recommends an AFP test, it is usually done between weeks 16 and 18 of pregnancy (during the second trimester). The results of your AFP blood test can alert your doctor to possible birth defects. A high level of AFP can be an indication of a neural tube defect such as spina bifida.
AFP levels normally rise and fall at set times during pregnancy, so an abnormal AFP may mean that your baby is due earlier or later than estimated. This is the most common reason for abnormal AFP levels. You're pregnant with more than one baby.
Here is the normal range: For adults: less than 40 ng/mL. At 15 to 21 weeks' gestation: 10 to 150 ng/mL.
The singleton pregnancy detection rates are 88% for anencephaly and 79% for open spina bifida (false-positive rate, 3%). Down syndrome risk is based on MoM values of all 5 markers and maternal age at time of delivery....Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) Quad Screen, Penta Screen, Test Summary. AFP levels typically rise until around the 12th week of pregnancy. Then the levels drop consistently until birth. If your fetus has Down syndrome, substances like AFP and unconjugated estriol will likely be low. But hCG and inhibin A levels will probably be high.
At 15 to 18 weeks of gestation = 10 to 150 ng/mL (10 to 150 µg/L).
Higher than normal AFP levels may mean your baby has an increased risk of having a neural tube defect, such as: Spina bifida, a condition in which the bones of the spine don't close around part of the spinal cord. Anencephaly, a condition in which the brain does not develop properly.
