Studs shall be a minimum No. 3, standard or stud grade lumber.
A stud or partition wall, built with either plasterboard, or lath and plaster, is rarely constructed as a load-bearing structure. There are however exceptions to this a stud wall may still help strengthen the structure of a building even though it may not technically be load-bearing (particularly in older homes).
In nonload-bearing walls and partitions, that are not part of a braced wall panel, studs shall be spaced not more than 24 inches (610 mm) on center. In interior nonload-bearing walls and partitions, studs are permitted to be set with the long dimension parallel to the wall.
Stud spacing is normally 16 inches in exterior walls, although 24-inch spacing of 24 studs is acceptable in one-story buildings if wall sheathing or siding is of adequate thickness to bridge across studs.
The 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) requires braced wall panels to be spaced no greater than 20 feet measured end to end. And there must be a shear wall located at least 10 feet from the end of each Braced Wall Line.
Heavier gauge metal studs are used in load bearing walls and structural applications such as exterior walls. Lighter gauge metal studs are used in non-load bearing applications such as some interior walls, half-walls, and partitions.
Any stud in an exterior wall or bearing partition shall be permitted to be cut or notched to a depth not exceeding 25 percent of its width. Studs in nonbearing partitions shall be permitted to be notched to a depth not to exceed 40 percent of a single stud width.
Studs shall be a minimum No. 3, standard or stud grade lumber. Exception: Bearing studs not supporting floors and nonbearing studs shall be permitted to be utility grade lumber, provided that the studs are spaced in ance with Table R602. 3(5).
