Written in the present tense. As early as possible, the cutline should describe the action in the photo. Include degrees but do not include titles unless the photo is a stand-alone or the subject is not mentioned in the accompanying story.
Captions: Captions are the short (usually one-line) headlines / titles / explanations for the photo appearing over/above the cutlines. Cutlines: Cutlines (at newspapers and some magazines) are the words (under the caption, if. there is one) describing the photograph or illustration.
John Doe (who) apprehends an intruder (what happened, written in the present tense) late Sunday night (when) at his home (where). The intruder was attempting a home invasion (why). Assuming youve covered the five Wsand that youve done so accuratelyyouve done your job. Thats it.
There are four main types of captions: standard, group, identification, and quote only. The standard (or expanded) caption are the mini stories we discussed earlier.
In some cases captions and cutlines are distinguished, where the caption is a short (usually one-line) title/explanation for the photo, while the cutline is a longer, prose block under the caption, generally describing the photograph, giving context, or relating it to the article.
Tips Always look carefully at the photo before writing the cutline. Dont editorialize or include your opinion. Be specific. Write from left rather than from left to right. Write complete sentences. Present tense is preferred, but past is acceptable.
cutline -- Description or comment that goes with an illustration, graphic and/or photo. All photos must have cutlines (called captions in yearbooks). Cutline info should give reader NEW or MORE information and should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER state the obvious.
