When you deregister the AMI, it is simply deleted. However, all the snapshots that were attached to the AMI remain and need to be deleted manually.

Scroll down the left navigation panel and choose Snapshots under Elastic Block Store. Disabling an AMI changes its state to disabled, makes the AMI private if it was previously shared, and prevents any new EC2 instance launches from that disabled AMI.
AMIs must not contain passwords, authentication keys, key pairs, security keys, or other credentials for any reason. AMIs must not request or use access or secret keys from users to access AWS resources.
Resolution Note the AMI ID in the error message. Open the Amazon EC2 console, and from the navigation pane, choose AMIs. Choose the AMI that you noted in the error message, open the Actions menu, and then choose Deregister AMI. Use the EC2 console or the AWS CLI to delete the EBS snapshot.
