hello my name is jeff schalleberger and im going to talk to you a little bit about a technique called x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy or xps uh we offer this here in the materials characterization lab at penn state uh you may have also heard the term esca used thats exactly the same technique it stands for electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis xps is by far the more commonly used terms thats what ill use throughout my presentation here xps is based on the photoelectric effect the photoelectric effect is we shine light onto a solid sample and we uh that light in our case in the form of low energy x-rays ejects electrons that were originally bound to the atoms in the material and we knock those electrons off into the vacuum and ultimately measure these with a spectrometer the equation that describes the photoelectric effect is shown here very simple equation this is actually what albert einstein won his nobel prize for in 1921 for some work he did explaining this effect in 19

XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) has been used in combination with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) to study the oxidation state, structure and morpholog of pure iron and iron-cadmium electrodes in various stages of cycling.
Simply put, XPS uses an x-ray beam to excite atoms on the surface of a solid sample, which spurs the release of photoelectrons. From there, the kinetic energy and the number of electrons that escape from the top 0 to 10 nanometers of the sample are measured.
Satellite peaks is used to identify Shake-ups, energy loss, plasmons and various un-identified Peaks. These appears as peaks to the high binding energy sides to the main peak in the XPS spectrum.
In XPS spectra of materials, all binding energies should be corrected using a standard. Usually, carbon element with binding energy of C 1s = 284.6 eV is used as an internal standard. You should shift the binding energies of your samples based on this value.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. ... The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
The intensity depends on the X-ray emission, charge neutralization, resolution, sample itself and many other parameters. So it may happen that withn the same sample and using same setting you would get a different peak intensity if you measure them on different date/time.
ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis), also known as XPS (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) is a method for characterizing the top few atomic layers at the surface of a solid. ESCA can not only give the elemental composition of a surface (C, O, N, etc.)
In XPS, the atoms of the sample's surface absorb X-rays and emit electrons, but in XRF the atoms of the sample both absorb and emit X-rays.
Basically, two different x ray sources are used in xps to distinguish Auger peaks from photo electron peaks. An Auger peak represents the kinetic energy of an auger electron which changes with the energy of primary xrays.
