To start, open a PDF file in docHub. To use the accessibility checker, you'll need Acrobat Pro. The Task Pane may open automatically depending on your settings. If not, open it from the menu by selecting View - Tools - Accessibility - Open. Press F6 to focus on the Task Pane, then select Full Check. Set the report location in the Accessibility Checker Options dialog and click Start Checking. Results will appear in the Accessibility Checker panel for you to review. The checker categorizes issues into Document, Page Content, Forms, Alternate Text, Tables, Lists, or Headings.

Here are some steps to make your PDF Section 508 compliant: Use a PDF authoring tool that supports accessibility features. Add alternative text to images. Create tags for headings. Add metadata to the document.
How to test: Run the accessibility checker that is built in to Acrobat Pro. Select Tools Accessibility Full Check then read the report and follow the prompts. The report lists items in various categories such as Document, Page Content, etc.
Scanned documents are pictures, and as such any text in them cannot be read by a screen reader. In order to make a scanned document readable you will need to use a tool called Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
Unfortunately, image-based PDFs are completely inaccessible if they are just scanned images. In order to make an image-based PDF accessible, the content creator should convert the text using optical character recognition (OCR) software (such as docHub Pro or ABBYY Fine Reader).
The fastest and easiest way to make sure your PDF is accessible is to run the Accessibility Checker before you generate or save your document as a PDF. After youve addressed any issues found by the Accessibility Checker, Microsoft 365 will use that information to create accessibility tags in the PDF.
How to check if PDF text is accessible. First, determine if the PDF document was generated from digital text or a scanned image of text. A scanned image of text is not accessible and will need to have optical character recognition (OCR) applied.
The basic components of an accessible PDF form include: All form fields have a unique name. All form fields have tooltips. All required fields have appropriate visual and non-visual indicators. Form fields are correctly tagged. Forms have a logical reading and keyboard navigation order.
Scan a document as a PDF file and edit it in Word In Word, click File Open. Browse to the location of the PDF file on your computer and click Open. A message appears, stating that Word will convert the PDF file into an editable Word document. Click OK.
