Perspective and Tense A great time to strongly consider present tense is if you decide to write in first-person point of view. First-person narration is already immersive by orienting readers directly into the narrators perspective. We experience what theyre doing, feeling, and thinking as they do, feel, and think!
To avoid using I in first-person writing, do two things. Use my or mine or me when possible. Describe what the person sees or does rather than say, I did it.
A good practice is to replace the pronoun with a noun, identifying specifically what is being talked about. A reflection paper is an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding and analysis of the material that you are covering in class or reading, and how it may affect the way you think and practice.
Do not write in first or second person use only third person. How do I write my opinion in third person? First and second person should not be used in formal writing, such as a term paper. First person is the use of I, me, my, we etc. Second person is the use of you, your, etc.
Try recasting sentences that start with I more objectively, so that the focus is on the what the emotion, the object, the person, the action and so on rather than the sense being used to experience it or the I-narrator doing the experience. Use the principles of free indirect speech to reduce your I count.
Instead of saying, I think this author is conveying the main characters despair, you can instead write, the main characters despair is communicated through the authors use of The focus is on the main characters despair and how the author conveys it rather than what I think.
