How do you legally use fonts?

You really do need to read the End User License Agreement (EULA) for each typeface you purchase. Typically, a designer buys a font license for a specific project, such as a clients brochure. The license may restrict the use of the font.

Do I need permission to use a particular font or typeface?

Yes. Even if your brand only uses one typeface (lets say, Futura Now), the font software must be licensed for the different environments where it will be used.

Can a typeface be copyrighted?

Generally, copyright law in the U.S. does not protect typefaces. Fonts may be protected as long as the font qualifies as computer software or a program (in fact, most fonts are programs or software). Bitmapped fonts are considered computerized representations of a typeface (and are not protected by copyright law).

Why cant I change the font in Excel?

Note: You cannot change the default font for an entire workbook in Excel for the web, but you can change the font style and size for a worksheet. Select the cell or cell range that has the text or number you want to format. Click the arrow next to Font and pick another font.

How do I know if a font is trademarked?

If youve purchased a font or downloaded it from a legitimate source, it should come with a licensing agreement or a ReadMe file. This document will typically provide clarity on usage rights and any copyright claims.

Are you allowed to use any font?

Unless you download the font from a reputable website that states it is free for commercial use, its probably not free. Although many free fonts allow unrestricted use (including use for commercial projects and as logotype fonts), free fonts can sometimes be commercial fonts that are illegally copied.
