Title case involves capitalizing all major words. For example, in APA Style, the title of an essay that appears at the top of the first page of text (see page 2 of the Annotated Student Sample Paper) and journal titles in references are in title case. See below for an example: Godfrey, D. ( 2005).
The rules are fairly standard for title case: Capitalize the first and the last word. Capitalize nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs (including phrasal verbs such as play with), adverbs, and subordinate conjunctions. Lowercase articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions (regardless of length).
Sentence case is used when you write a title or a subheading the same way you would write a regular sentence. In sentence case, the first letter of the first word is capitalized, and all other letters and words that follow are in lowercase, except for proper nouns (e.g., Major heat wave arrives in California).
General Rules for Title Capitalization Always Capitalize First and Last Words in a Title. Always Capitalize Nouns and Pronouns. Always Capitalize Verbs. Always Capitalize Adverbs and Adjectives. Dont Capitalize Coordinating Conjunctions. Dont Capitalize Articles. Dont Capitalize Short Prepositions.
Lowercase only minor words that are three letters or fewer in a title or heading (except the first word in a title or subtitle or the first word after a colon, em dash, or end punctuation in a heading): short conjunctions (e.g., and, as, but, for, if, nor, or, so, yet) articles (a, an, the)
The capitalization rules are explained in more detail in the next section, but basically title case means that you capitalize every word except articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (and, or, but, ), and (short) prepositions (in, on, for, up, ).
Basics of formatting an APA title page in Word Title of the paper: All major words capitalized. Bolded. Positioned in the upper-middle of the page (hit Enter 3-4 times) Author name (your name) Affiliation, or name of the college Course number: Course Name Name of the instructor Date the paper is due
In title case, the first letter of each word in the title should be capitalized except for certain small words like a, the, and of. Example: Title case I read The Catcher in the Rye yesterday. Title case is used for capitalizing the words in a title, subtitle, or heading.
