Apply a skim coat. The same technique gets rid of textured walls. A thin coat of mud is applied over the entire wall surface, allowed to dry, and then sanded smooth. Especially bumpy walls may need more than one coat. Skim coating a whole room is both messy and time-consuming.
1. Soak and Scrape Drywall Texture A floor scraper. Protective glasses. Sandpaper. Dust mask. Joint compound. Drywall taping knife. Spray bottle or pump sprayer filled with water.
The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. Youll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife.
Four ways to get rid of unwanted textured walls: Apply a skim coat. Replace the textured drywall with new drywall. Cover the walls with another material, such as wood. Live with it.
The process of smoothing textured walls with skim coating is fairly common. It refers to spreading a layer of joint compound over the walls to fill in the bumps and valleys in the texture, effectively creating a smooth surface.
Option 1: Use Flat Paint On Textured Walls To Reduce The Reflection. The lower the paint sheen, the less it will reflect texture and imperfections. Flat paint is best for reducing reflection and hiding texture or flaws on walls and ceilings.
If the texture is too deep for complete removal, you can level the walls with drywall compound. After the initial coat has dried, apply a second coat to ensure proper leveling of the surface. Once the second coat has dried completely, use 120 to 150 grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth, flat surface.
The best option is a latex- or oil-based paint with a low-maintenance sheen that has a satin or semi-gloss sheen rather than a flat matte finish and is reflective enough to draw attention to the finer features of the wall texture. The least glossy texture is flat, which is often referred to as matte.
