let me show you how to use photoshops knockout feature to use editable text as a mask this document has a background layer two adjustment layers creating this effect a shape layer and a text layer start by selecting the text layer and go into the blending options from the knockout drop down select shallow then bring the fill to zero you will now see the background image but not the effects to reveal the effect select the text layer and the rectangle shape by holding shift and clicking on both and press ctrl g to place them into a group the shallow knockout will then act as a mask that will cut through this groups layers but not anything outside of it the knockout is better than a mask because you can keep your text editable
