When storing logs outside, keep them: Protected from the elements (rain, sleet, and snow undo prior drying and increase moisture content); a quality tarp is a good solution. Elevated, with plenty of airflow between the logs. Off the ground, preventing pests or moisture from entering.
Vinyl and nylon are water-resistant and very strong, but vinyl may not hold up well to heat. Building materials like shingles or tin are also effective in covering and protecting your firewood. These materials are easily found at your local hardware store or online.
Damp wood is slow to ignite, slow burning, doesnt burn as hot as it should, and causes more smoke than is necessary or healthy to breathe. Your firewood cover can be as simple as using a tarp or plastic secured with bungees, rocks, bricks or wood. Or you can get creative with PVC, EMT, pallets or racks.
A tarp and bungee cord cover is the least expensive and most accessible firewood cover to build. This type of firewood cover can be put together in minutes with just a few supplies from your local hardware store. A tarp will protect your wood from the rain and snow, while bungies will keep it tightly secured.
To shield your logs from rain, snow, and ice, use a weatherproof firewood cover or a sheet of tarpaulin. However, when the weather is dry and sunny, remove the cover to allow ample ventilation around your logs. This prevents them from sweating and helps maintain their dry condition.
By covering all of your firewood with a tarp, you can prevent the air from getting through all of your wood pieces.
Ideally, wood that has been treated with a preserver should also be treated with a suitable top coat such as an wood oil, wood paint or wood varnish. These top-coat products seal in the preserver and provide protection against weathering and wear from direct contact.
