A covered bridge is a timber-truss bridge with a roof and siding. These coverings extend the bridges lifespan by shielding it from the worst the Canadian winter can throw at it, and they were once an integral part of life in New Brunswick communities.
In fact, the covers were designed to protect the bridge itself. Constant exposure to sun, snow, and rain left wooden bridges with a useful life of about a decade. With a roof to protect the structural supports from the elements, a bridge could last a century or more (and hundreds have).
Spanning 390.75 metres (1282 feet), the structure claims the title of the longest covered bridge in the world and is an icon of New Brunswicks built heritage.
The Canadian province of New Brunswick has 58 covered bridges, ing to the Government of New Brunswick. The Hartland Covered Bridge in Hartland is the worlds longest covered bridge, spanning 1,282 feet (391 m).
167 Hartland Covered Bridge / Longest span
The first long-span bridges were wooden. Made from available timber, such as spruce and white pine, the bridges were flexible and strong but decayed quickly when exposed to rain and snow. By the early 1800s, bridge builders began to protect their bridges with roofs and siding making covered bridges.
The bridge is recognized for both its individual merits and as the longest covered bridge in the world, as well as for its representation of typical covered bridge construction in New Brunswick.
