Anything 1/4 and smaller should be flooded with a high quality log home stain. For checks that are about 1/4 and larger in width (which are large enough to accept round backer rod), they can be effectively sealed with such products as Log Builder caulking, or, for a more textured appearance, Log Jam Chinking.
The rule of thumb is if the gap between log courses is of an inch or less, you should use caulk. If it is larger than of an inch, you should use chink. These products are designed to withstand the movement of your log home in these applications. Grip Strip backer rod should be used to fill the larger openings.
As for the cracks in question, they are called checks and are a natural part of the wood drying process. The only time that a check needs to be filled is if it is facing upwards where water will stand in it after a rain. The others are a trait of log homes and only enhance the rustic look of the home.
Can I use regular caulking to fill gaps and checking in my log cabin? No, it is recommended to use products like Log Builder caulking or Log Jam Chinking that are specifically designed for log homes.
Apply a good quality, siliconized latex caulk (not pure silicon) into the check, bringing it out close, but not even with the surface of the log. Skim off the excess caulking with your finger or a putty knife, making sure the caulking makes a strong, consistent contact with the top and bottom of the crack.
It is not necessary to seal checks on the bottom half of round logs since they do not collect water. For a uniform appearance of your home, you may want to seal them as well. It is not usually necessary to seal checks or fissures that are less than 1/4 wide since they cannot accumulate that much water.
However, when the elements are against you, its worthwhile investing in tarpaulin to cover the front of the log store to ensure that the wood remains dry. Why? Dry firewood burns quicker and is easier to light, so however you store it, you should always make sure that it is dry.
Cracks in your logs can cause some serious problems. However most cracks are nothing to worry about. It is natural for wood to crack or check as it dries and this is actually part of the charm of a log home. Its that rustic, weathered look that makes them unique.
