Compression of the LDF file typically is fast, however it may take more time to compress an LDF file that has never been previously compressed. If the LDF file cannot be compressed, Time Matters tries again the first time you open Time Matters the next day.
Large database transactions, such as importing large amounts of data, can lead to a large transaction log file. Transaction log backups not happening fast enough causes the SQL log file to become huge. SQL log files also enlarge due to incomplete replication or availability group synchronization.
Structured logging is a contemporary and highly effective approach to logging. Each log entry adheres to a recognizable and consistent format that facilitates automated searching, analysis, and monitoring using log management tools. The most widely embraced structured format is JSON: Copied!
The LDF file is the log file for the database. Its a critical part of maintaining the data integrity of the database. Removing it can cause loss of data and SQL Server will in a best case create a new one and pick up from there.
Shrink a data or log file using SSMS. In Object Explorer, connect to an instance of the SQL Server Database Engine and then expand that instance. Expand Databases and then right-click the database that you want to shrink. Point to Tasks, point to Shrink, and then select Files.
Solution 1 Back up your transaction log file using the tools you are already using. Then you can shrink the transaction log file to a smaller size using the GUI in SSMS ( Right click on LOGODB | Tasks | Shrink | Files ) Ensure you have a regular transaction log backup scheduled.
Solution 2 Switch the database to the SIMPLE Recovery Model in the Options section. Perform a FULL backup of your database. Then you can shrink the transaction log file to a smaller size using the GUI in SSMS ( Right click on LOGODB | Tasks | Shrink | Files ):
Note: You need the sysadmin fixed server role or the dbowner fixed database role to shrink the log. Right-click the database and select Tasks - Shrink - Files. Change the type to Log . Under Shrink action, select Release unused space and click OK.
