During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer. A Pap smear may also detect certain infections and inflammation. The test is named for an American physician, Dr. George Papanicolaou, who developed the Pap smear.
A Pap smear only tests for signs of HPV, and not for other STDs or their effects. There are many reasons to get tested for STDs, but an STD test is not automatically included as part of a well woman exam; you may need to request it at your appointment.
The patient should be supine, in dorsal lithotomy position to correctly perform a Pap smear (see the image below). The coccyx of the patient must be at the edge of the examination table to provide adequate visualization of the cervix once the speculum is inserted.
The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous. During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer. A Pap smear may also detect certain infections and inflammation.
Do I have to take off all my clothes? Ordinarily, yes. You will be given a gown and asked to remove your clothes, including your bra and panties. You can undress in privacy and put on the gown before the clinician comes in for the exam.
