Linking. With linked CSS, CSS rules are stored in a separate file. To refer to that file from the HTML page, add the link element (and its closing element within XHTML) to the head element, as shown in the following example, which assumes that the stylesheet is stored in the file named style. css.
The style element allows an author to put style sheet rules in the head of the document. XHTML permits any number of style elements in the head section of a document. The syntax of style data depends on the style sheet language. Rules for style rule precedences and inheritance depend on the style sheet language.
You can link an HTML file to an external style sheet using the HTML element. The element specifies any external resource for the HTML document, but is usually used to link to an external style sheet. You place the element in the section of your HTML file.
That is, the attribute alone is enough, so that when the attribute is set without a value, it counts as true. In XML-based languages, attribute minimization is disallowed and attributes must have a value; for example, in XHTML, checked is invalid, and must be written checked=checked .
CSS can be applied to HTML or XHTML using three methods: linked, embedded, and inline. In the linked method, the CSS is stored in a separate file, instead of directly in the HTML page. In the embedded method, CSS is stored as part of the HTML page, in the header section.
To link the CSS to an HTML file, we use the tag inside the HTML section. Your CSS file will look like the image displayed below: Lets look at another example where you add an image using CSS. Note: Make sure that the image file is in the same folder as the CSS and HTML files.
External stylesheets use the tag inside the head element. The rel attribute explains the relation the link has to our document. The value in this case will always be stylesheet , since that is what were creating a link to. The href attribute is the link to our stylesheet.
Authors specify external style sheets with the following attributes of the link element: Set the value of href to the location of the style sheet file. Set the value of the type attribute to indicate the language of the linked (style sheet) resource. Specify that the style sheet is persistent, preferred, or alternate:
