You can use ActionResult as the return type for action and any subtypes within this type, e.g., JSON, PartialView, View, RedirectToAction. If you use subtypes, as in this case ViewResult, you are binding your action so it can only return subtypes as results, which is View.
IActionResult is more suitable for scenarios where a method may return various response types depending on different conditions. ActionResult is preferred when you want to clearly specify both the data type and the HTTP status code to be returned.
IActionResult: IActionResult is an interface that defines a generic HTTP response. It allows developers to flexibly return different types of HTTP responses from web API methods or controllers.
IHttpActionResult is for ASP.NET Web Api, while IActionResult is for ASP.NET Core. Theres no such thing as Web Api in ASP.NET Core. Its all just Core. However, some people still refer to creating an ASP.NET Core API as a Web Api, which adds to the confusion.
The IActionResult return type is appropriate when multiple ActionResult return types are possible in an action. The ActionResult types represent various HTTP status codes. Any non-abstract class deriving from ActionResult qualifies as a valid return type.
An action result is what a controller action returns in response to a browser request. The ASP.NET MVC framework supports several types of action results including: ViewResult - Represents HTML and markup. EmptyResult - Represents no result.
To return a view, we use the View() extension method, which belongs to the Controller Base Class. Note: Views are typically returned from the Action method as a ViewResult, which is a type of ActionResult. Your action method can create and return a ViewResult directly, but that isnt commonly done.
