S-Log captures far more information than standard REC. 709 footage can record, giving you more control over the finished image in post-production. Instead of exposing for highlights or shadows when shooting, you can capture all of this information and choose how you want to display it later.
As I mentioned, theres LUT to create Rec709 color space for your footage but this is only one type of LUT as there are tons of them out there so if you want to know more about them and want to know how they can help you do your intended color grading, reading our blog about Color Correction and Grading in PostPace.
So how do we expose LOG correctly? Expose to the right (meaning to the right of the histogram i.e slight over exposure). Use an 18 percent grey card. Send a normal REC 709 curve to the monitor/eye peice and expose that as you normally would.
0:01 0:53 And looks really gray and desaturated Rec 709 is a different color profile. And looks much moreMoreAnd looks really gray and desaturated Rec 709 is a different color profile. And looks much more saturated. And contrasty when compared to log. Now although log is more desaturated.
Why shoot with log? Log can be a great tool if you know you will have time to edit your footage in post-production. It will help you get more detail in poor or uneven lighting.
A default color profile (left) suffers from loss of detail in both the highlights and the shadows. A log color profile (right) preserves more detail, effectively giving your footage a wider dynamic range.
You may not need this in every filmmaking situation, of course, but if youre working in scenarios where contrast is high, such as on a bright day or in an interior lit with spotlights, it could be a way to avoid blown-out highlights and featureless shadows.
The wide tone area captured by S-Log makes it especially effective when shooting subjects which tend to experience loss of details in shadows or overblown highlights.
