Repeat cytology in 12 months, if the result is: Greater than or equal to ASCUS, refer to colposcopy. Normal, repeat the cytology again in 12 months.
A finding of abnormal cells in the tissue that lines the outer part of the cervix. ASCUS is the most common abnormal finding in a Pap test. It may be a sign of infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) or other types of infection, such as a yeast infection.
An ASCUS PAP smear is almost never a sign of cancer. It is usually a result of mild infection or inflammation of the cervix. The chance of the ASCUS PAP smear leading to a pre-cancerous condition of the cervix is dependant on the HPV status.
You should start getting Pap tests at age 21. If your Pap test result is normal, your doctor may tell you that you can wait three years until your next Pap test.
Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem. If the Pap smear showed that the inflammation is severe, your doctor may want to find the cause, such as an infection. You may also need to have another Pap smear in six months to see if the inflammation has gone.
In most cases, the presence of abnormal squamous cells does not indicate the presence of cervical cancer. However, abnormal Pap results should always be discussed with a medical professional so that an individualized action plan can be created.

Results and Follow-Up Normal: No sign of disease. This means nothing irregular was found. Unclear: The lab couldnt determine whether the cells are normal or abnormal. Your healthcare provider may have you come back immediately or in six months for another Pap smear. Abnormal: The cells look different than they should.
